Discovering Winter Magic at Mill Creek Park

Last week, I had to make an unexpected trip to Northern Ohio. While it wasn’t a pleasure trip, any chance to see family—and photograph a new place—is never wasted. A cousin of mine played tour guide at Mill Creek Park in Youngstown, OH, and despite the cold, the park was absolutely beautiful. Not to sound cliché, but it truly felt like a winter wonderland.

Spanning 2,658 acres and stretching across two cities, Mill Creek Park offers plenty to explore. I can’t wait to visit again when there’s less risk of my camera equipment freezing!

One highlight was Lanterman’s Mill, built between 1845 and 1846. Restored in the 1980s, it’s now a fully functional mill that grinds buckwheat, corn, and wheat. Although it was closed during my visit, it’s open to the public for tours.

Another fascinating spot is the suspension bridge, constructed in 1895. Known by many names—the Silver Bridge, Cinderella Bridge, Castle Bridge, and even the Walt Disney Bridge—it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

The pavilion and statue in Fellows Riverside Garden were another favorite. Exploring the garden, I couldn’t help but feel like Mary Lennox from The Secret Garden. Someone had thoughtfully bundled up Saint Fiacre, the patron saint of gardeners, adding a charming touch to the scene.

Mill Creek Park is truly a hidden gem—especially in winter—and I’m looking forward to returning when the weather is a bit kinder to my camera gear.

Below is the google map to Lanterman's Mill if you find yourself in that part of Ohio!
